South Korean President Yoon has Apologized for Declaring Emergency Martial Law, but Not Resigned

South Korea has been making headlines after the whole nation took to the roads to revolt against the brief yet controversial Martial Law applied to the nation. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol had declared the emergency Martial Law as of 11 p.m. on December 3 and about 2 hours later around 1:00 a.m. on December 4, the troops were ordered to withdraw in accordance with the National Assembly’s resolution to lift Martial Law, followed by which it was lifted by the President.

However, the call for President’s resignation and strict investigation had echoed the streets of the nation. Followed by which, President Yoon has now come to the front and apologized to the nation and the people. In his first public appearance since imposing martial law, he delivered a speech at Seoul Station in Seoul, South Korea during which he said

“My fellow citizens, I declared an emergency martial law of as of 11:00 p.m. on December 3. And about 2 hours later around 1:00 a.m. on December 4, the troops were ordered to withdraw in accordance with the National assembly’s resolution to lift Martial Law and I lifted it after a late night Cabinet Meeting.

The declaration of emergency martial law was driven by my desperation as President who is ultimately in charge of state affairs. However, this has caused anxiety and inconvenience to the public. I am very sorry and sincerely apologize to our citizens who must have been very surprised.

I will not avoid legal and political responsibility regarding the declaration of Martial law.

My fellow citizens, there are rumours about another declaration of Martial law, but I want to make it clear that there will never be a declaration of a second Martial law.

I will leave it to our party to take measures to stabilize the political situation in the future including my term in office. Moving forward, our party and the government will take responsibility for the management of State affairs.

I apologize again for causing concern to the public.

After the speech, he bows in respect to the nation. Moreover, while he offered to accept any legal consequences, he has not said anything about him resigning. However, as soon as the speech was over, his party People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hun called for Yoon’s resignation, saying he was no longer fit for the office. He has stated that there is “credible evidence” showing that Yoon had attempted to arrest him, who is a senior lawmaker and also arrest political leaders such as opposition leader Lee Jae-myung. Han said that Yoon had directed the country’s defense counterintelligence commander to arrest them on charges of “anti-state activities.”

As per reports, an investigation is underway in which Yoon’s former Defence Minister, Kim Yong Hyun, is suspected of urging the martial law declaration, and may be charged for his rebellion. Meanwhile, Yeo In-hyung, the defence counterintelligence commander, along with several other officials, have been suspended by the defence ministry. Furthermore, it is yet to be clear if Yoon will resign or not.

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis takes oath as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, says “will take decisions…”

After a long wait of over two weeks, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis finally took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Thursday evening. The oath ceremony was held in Mumbai’s Azad maidan where he addressed his first conference after taking the oath. This is his third time becoming the CM of the state while the NCP Chief Ajit Pawar has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the 6th time, alongside Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde.

Even though the Mahayuti Alliance consists of three parties -BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, only the CM and two deputies have taken oath, while other leaders have still not taken oaths to begin their roles. A Pune-based couple had sought help from the Chief Minister’s relief fund where the wife requested for funds for her husband’s treatment.
