Tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially announced the launch of a new political party, formed after a public fallout between Musk and President Donald Trump over federal spending and governance, ending what was once a close alliance between the two. The America Party aims to shake up what Elon calls the United States’ entrenched “one-party system.”
In a series of fiery posts on his social media platform X, Musk declared, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” citing waste, corruption, and bloated spending as key reasons behind his decision to form a third-party alternative. He accused both the Democrats and Republicans of operating as a single “uniparty,” indistinguishable in their failure to serve the American people.
This development follows Musk’s departure from the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which was an agency he once was leading at Trump’s behest to streamline federal bureaucracy. But there was a huge conflict in ideas when Musk publicly opposed Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a domestic spending package projected to add $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.
Musk’s criticism of the bill was very serious. He accused Republican lawmakers of “debt slavery” and said that he would do “everything in his power” to unseat those who had supported the legislation. “They will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth,” he said in one of his most important remarks.
The development has become controversial after Trump hinted at retaliatory actions, including potentially revoking federal funding for Musk’s companies and even questioning the tech mogul’s immigration status. “We’ll have to take a look,” Trump remarked when asked about deporting Musk, a naturalized US citizen originally from South Africa.
The tipping point came on Independence Day, when Musk posted a poll on X asking if Americans wanted “independence from the two-party system.” Over 1.2 million people responded, with more than 65% voting “Yes.” In response, Musk posted, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!”
Since then, Musk has laid out his strategy to “crack the uniparty,” drawing inspiration from military history to advocate for a concentrated effort on specific congressional races. “The way we’re going to crack the system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield,” he wrote.
Musk is now appealing America’s disenchanted voters to rally behind his new platform, promising to target 2–3 key Senate seats and 8–10 House districts where incumbents can be unseated. He hopes to create swing power in Congress that could become a powerful voice on major legislation.
Despite skepticism from some quarters, where critics fear a repeat of Ross Perot’s 1992 third-party run that split votes and altered the presidential race, Musk insists that the time is ripe for fundamental change in American politics. “Americans want real political change,” he declared.
What began as a policy disagreement has quickly evolved into a full-blown political movement. Whether the America Party can gain real traction in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms remains uncertain, but with Elon Musk at its helm and a country increasingly disillusioned with traditional politics, the disruption may already be underway.
