Know who is Sprinter Hima Das, who is breaking records in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022

Hima Das Commonwealth 2022: ‘Ding Express’ Hima Das qualified for the women’s 200m semifinals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, making her top heat 2 with a blistering performance. She covered the 200m distance in just 23.42 seconds and entered the semi-finals in Birmingham. Apart from her consistent performance in the 200m, she holds the national record of 50.79 seconds in the women’s 400m at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Adidas has signed an endorsement deal with Hima Das, saying that the athlete will be equipped with the best Adidas products for her racing and athletic needs. Hailing from a small village in Assam, Hima has made the country proud by winning medals at an international level.

Early life

Hima Das was born on 9 January near Kandhulimari village in Nagaon district of Assam. Her parents, Ronjit and Jonali Das, belonged to the local Kyberta community and farmed to support their family. Hima is the eldest among six siblings. She attended Dhing Public High School. She loved playing football with the boys there.

Shamshul Sheikh, a teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, saw her amazing speed while playing football and asked her to switch to sprinting.

Career

Due to lack of proper tracks and required equipment, she used to practice on football fields. However, in 2016, she entered the inter-district meet, where her talent was showcased. She won a bronze medal at the state meet and reached the 100m final at the Junior Nationals that year.

Later, she qualified for the women’s 200m at the Asian Youth Championships in Bangkok and the World Youth Championships in Nairobi. However, her first international win was accomplished in the 400m final at the 2018 World U-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. This also was the country’s first international gold in track events.

Her major success was achieved at the 2018 Asian Games, where she bagged three medals, one being gold in the 4×400m mixed relay, another gold in the women’s 4×400m relay and then silver in the women’s 400m.

After returning from injury in 2019, Hima won five international medals within a month. The first came at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland, followed by another gold five days later at the Kutno Athletics Meet. A week after that, she won his third gold in a row at the Kladno Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic and his fourth gold at the Tabor Athletics Meet. Messina Rodney’s fifth gold at the athletic meeting. Although these European events are not tough athletics meets, it is a great achievement for an Indian athlete.

Awards and achievements

At just 18 years of age, she received the prestigious Arjuna Award and in 2021, she was appointed as a DSP in the Assam Police. She was appointed as India’s first Youth Ambassador by UNICEF India.
