Suryakumar Yadav: Suryakumar is another name of fear for bowlers, why is Andy Flower giving such a warning?

Abu Dhabi: Former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower, who is coaching the Gulf Giants franchise in the first season of the ILT20, believes that 360-degree players like Suryakumar Yadav cause a lot of problems for the bowlers, taking them off their line and length. The 32-year-old Suryakumar has been in scintillating form and recently scored his third T20 century in the series against Sri Lanka in Rajkot.

‘360 degree players like Suryakumar are creating a lot of difficulties for the bowlers. Fast bowlers may leave their best length, batsmen may go past the keeper or fine leg. We are now also seeing reverse sweep at short third man against fast bowlers. Joe Root tries to hit a similar shot here.

He said, ‘It’s good to see these skills. It takes guts to play these shots. The game demands more variety and more skills, and players are looking for ways to achieve this.

In recent times, many greats of the game have been criticized for playing low strikes in T20 cricket. Asked if there is room for players with such low strike rates in T20 cricket, Flower said different players have roles to play but it depends on whether the team wants a coach and a captain.

“We all love attacking of course, but I still think different types of players have a role. How to balance that is up to the selectors, coach and captain. But of course aggressive batting is important but there are different ways of scoring fast in cricket.

Apart from ILT20, 54-year-old Flower also coaches Lucknow Supergiants in the IPL. He has appointments as a coach in various leagues around the world and enjoys the challenge.
