Upcoming Honda Hybrid SUV to be a big competition to Grand Vitara, know expected features

Japanese automaker Honda is preparing two new SUVs for the Indian market. In 2023, the company will present to our market an unprecedented compact SUV based on the Amaze sedan platform. This will be the brand’s global market and launch in select markets where HR-V is not available. The new Honda SUV is expected to arrive in mid-2023, before the festival season.

Details of this project are kept confidential. This is because no tests have yet been found in India or any other country. In the Indian market, the new Honda SUV will compete directly with Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushak, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Tigun and MG Aster. It will also receive a powerful hybrid powertrain, which will compete with the Toyota Urban Hyryder and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Both models are also available with a powerful hybrid powertrain.

Honda is currently selling the WR-V in the compact crossover segment. However, it will be suspended until April 2023 due to the introduction of new effective driving emissions (RDE) standards. Honda will follow Hyundai’s strategy of selling the Creta 5-seater and Alcazar 7-seater SUVs in our market. The new Honda SUV is expected to come in two seating layouts, 5-seater and 7-seater. The 5-seater model is approximately 4.3 m long.

The new hybrid SUV will reportedly be called the Honda “Elevate” as the name has been registered by the Indian company in 2021. The new model will share engine options with fifth-generation city sedans on sale in our market. There won’t be a diesel engine, as Honda’s 1.5L i-DTEC engine won’t be upgraded to meet the stricter RDE standards. It comes with a 1.5 liter i-VTEC NA petrol engine with manual and CVT automatic transmissions.

Similar to the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, the Honda SUV will receive the brand’s patented 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine with e:HEV hybrid technology. This engine is currently powering city sedans in our market. It will come with two electric motors. The petrol unit produces a maximum power of 98bhp and with the electric assist it makes 109bhp. The combined torque output is 253 Nm. It comes with a single fixed gear ratio, along with three drive modes: engine, EV and hybrid.

Big changes will be made on board. The interior features an all-new electronic architecture and screen system from the new Accord & CR-V sold overseas. You get a 10.2-inch digital driver display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The hybrid SUV will also feature ADAS technology with features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist and more.
