Toyota is all set to bring the country’s first flex-fuel engine car, to be introduced this month

Toyota’s flex-fuel car to be unveiled on September 28

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that Toyota will unveil a new car, which will be powered by flex-fuel, in New Delhi on September 28.

This information was given by the Union Minister in his statement during the annual session of the Association of Automobile Component Manufacturers (ACMA). He said that he will unveil this new flex-fuel powered car.
Significantly, this car will be the first car based on this technology in the Indian market.

What is Flax-Fuel?
A ‘flex-fuel engine’ is an internal combustion engine (ICE) that can run on more than one type of fuel and mixture.

Usually, a mixture of petrol and ethanol or methanol is used in these. These engines are capable of working with these fuels in any ratio.
These engines are capable of running on 100% petrol or ethanol.
They are already being used in countries like Brazil, America and Canada.

Why are they needed?
Flax-fuels are very important for the environment as ethanol or methanol burns more efficiently than petrol thus reducing pollution.
Ethanol can be produced sustainably from products such as sugarcane and corn. Therefore, ethanol blending is a better option than importing petrol from other countries.

Other countries are also emphasizing on increasing such options, so that dependence on other countries can be reduced.

What will be the benefits of this?
India is focusing on flex-fuel as at present most of the fuel in the country is imported from other countries.
The adoption of flax-fuel will help boost the economy along with reducing India’s carbon footprint, as ethanol will be produced locally and boost the economy.
Apart from this, the import of fuel will also be reduced and the sugarcane and corn farmers of the country will also be benefited.

Outfable Plus
The central government has been considering making flex-fuel based engines mandatory in the petrol auto sector for a long time.
In such a situation, apart from Toyota, the country’s largest company Maruti Suzuki is also looking forward to make such changes in its cars to maintain a strong hold in the market.
Maruti had claimed that in addition to the E20 flex-fuel engine, it is also producing the E85 fuel engine.
