It has also been revealed in the study that humans cannot make sounds like monkeys, because humans lack a balloon-like structure in the throat called air sacs. It is the lack of airsacks, so that humans are able to make a steady sound and form words.
Primatologist Takeshi Nishimura of Kyoto University’s Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior in Japan said that the more complex vocal structures in non-human primates are the reason why they are not able to control vibration with precision.
W Tecumseh Ficht, co-author of the study and evolutionary biologist at the University of Vienna in Austria, said that vocal membranes are what enable other primates to produce higher and higher pitched sounds. But there are more breaks in his voice and the irregularity is also very high.
The study has been published in the journal Science. The study examined the anatomy of monkeys, including species such as chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and gibbons. Along with this, old world monkeys such as mekaku, gunon, baboons and mandrills have also been studied. The study also included New World monkeys such as capuchins, tamarins, marmosets and tytis.
