Earlier this month, Tata Motors announced plans to launch an all-electric version of the Thiago compact hatchback in celebration of World EV Day 2022. The Tata Thiago EV will officially debut on September 28.
Upon arrival, the new Tata EV will sit below the Tigor EV in the company’s electric lineup, meaning it could also be the cheapest electric vehicle in India. As the Mahindra e-Verito is no longer available, the Tigor EV is currently the cheapest 4-wheel electric vehicle in India and costs Rs 12.49 lakh to Rs 13.64 lakh (ex-showroom).
Nevertheless, Tiago EV is expected to share platform and powertrain with Tigor EV. The electric sedan uses a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The electric motor generates a maximum output of 74.7PS and a maximum torque of 170Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60km/h in 5.7 seconds.
It remains to be seen whether Tata has decided to equip the Tiago EV with a slightly smaller battery to keep the price down. The Tigor EV has an ARAI-certified range of 306 km on a single full charge, and the upcoming Tiago EV could have a somewhat similar range.
Speaking of styling, the Thiago EV is expected to retain the same overall design as the regular Thiago, although with some noticeable changes. Like the Tigor EV, the Tiago EV is also expected to receive blue accents on both the exterior and interior, along with EV badges on the fenders and tailgate.
