Honda plans to expand its product portfolio in India over the next few years. This time the Japanese automaker will focus on the fastest growing SUV segment with three new models. It should be noted that there is no official mention of an upcoming new Honda SUV. However, reports suggest that the company will target the small, medium and seven-seater SUV segments. In an SUV space of less than 4 meters, automakers can challenge the new Maruti by introducing the new Honda WR-V.
Brezza, Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue. The all-new WR-V will likely take design inspiration from the Honda RS SUV concept unveiled at GIIAS in 2022. The compact SUV can be offered with a 1.5L i-VTEC petrol engine, which is sufficient for 121PS and 145Nm. Two transmissions can be offered: a six-speed manual and a CVT automatic. This model shares a platform with the Honda Amaze subcompact sedan. It could debut later this year, with an Indian launch expected in 2023.
As mentioned earlier, Honda Cars India will also enter the highly competitive midsize SUV segment to challenge the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, the newly launched Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. If the reports are true, the upcoming Honda SUV could come with City Hybrid’s powertrain (eg 1.5L, 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle with two electric motors). It is estimated to be about 4.3 meters long. This model is expected to be launched in 2024.
Rumor has it that the Japanese automaker is also considering a three-row SUV to replace the Hyundai Alcazar and Tata Safari. There may be two seating arrangements: 6-seater and 7-seater. This model can support the next-generation Honda BR-V platform.
