It’s no secret that Mahindra is working to introduce a more practical five-door version of the Thar in the Indian market, and the vehicle is being spotted countless times. But the latest five-door Thar.
The prototype hinted at the fact that the lifestyle SUV could come with a sunroof for the first time!
Electric sunroofs have become very common on high-end, mass-market vehicles, but so far have not been offered on the Mahindra Thar. 5-door Mahindra Thar’s test mules.
It appears to have a hard top with a shut line across the top, suggesting that you might actually get a sunroof option.
A sunroof is not expected to come standard with the Thar 5 doors. Instead, it can be reserved for higher trims. Unlike the three-door Tar’s convertible soft-top option, the five-door version is expected to come standard with a hardtop. That said, the new 5-door Thar will definitely outperform the 3-door version currently priced at Rs 13.59 lakh to Rs 16.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
No changes are expected to the powertrain currently offered with the SUV. It is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine generating a maximum output of 150 PS and a maximum torque of 300 Nm (320 Nm with AT), and a 2.2-liter diesel engine producing 130 PS output and 300 Nm of torque. Both engines will likely come with a 6-speed MT and an optional 6-speed AT.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar will compete directly with the upcoming 5-door Force Gurkha.
It is expected to be released in Korea soon. Both SUVs will also be joined by the five-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which could debut at the 2023 Auto Expo next January.
