Government of India closed 94 YouTube channels spreading fake news, also blocked many URLs

India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said in a statement given on Thursday, July 21, that the Government of India has blocked 94 YouTube channels. Apart from this, the government has also blocked 16 social media accounts and 747 URLs i.e. Uniform Resource Locators. All these things have been blocked during 2021-22 due to the spread of fake news.

Government of India took big action
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the government has taken this action under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000. The Union Minister further said in his statement that the Government of India is taking strict action against those spreading false news, spreading rumours, and playing with the unity of the country through the Internet in the country.

Fact check team used in covid-19
Thakur said that to check the spread of fake news related to COVID-19, a special cell was set up by the fact checking team of Press Information Bureau (PIB) on March 31, 2020, through which people can get correct information related to COVID-19. able to verify it.

Government strict against those spreading fake news
According to the Union Minister, this special team answered 34,125 qualified questions and helped people to get the right information. Thakur said, PIB has also busted fake news and 875 posts on its social media platforms. The IB minister has claimed that the Indian government is about to make a new IT rule, which will prevent the spread of fake news and those who spread it will also be caught.
