A 16-year-old girl is suspected of shooting a 50-year-old woman with an assault rifle in Bhajanpura, northeast Delhi, Delhi police officials said Saturday, adding that a minor was arrested.
According to police, the minor charged the woman’s 25-year-old son with sexual assault in 2021 and is currently in prison. The woman who was shot was hospitalized and she was said to be out of harm’s way, police said.
Police Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Sain said that around 5:30 p.m. the police control room was notified that a shooting had been fired in Bhajanpura’s Gonda district. When the police team arrived at the scene, they were told that the woman had been shot by a minor who knew her and that her victim had been taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra hospital by local residents.
At the hospital, police found the woman running her grocery store on the ground floor of her home and was in her store when her girl approached her, shot her, and then ran away. The victim, her family and local residents were all able to identify the accused girl.
Investigators said the girl was apprehended within hours and recovered her homemade handgun, which she had used.
Then, “In 2021, the fact that her girl claimed to have been sexually assaulted by her son was revealed, and after that, the case was registered under the provisions of the Child Sexual Offense Protection Act for the alleged sexual assault of her. After that, my 25-year-old son was arrested and is still in prison,” the investigator said.
Another investigator said the reason the girl shot the woman while her son was already under arrest has yet to be ascertained. “The investigation is still in its preliminary stage and the motive will become clear when the girl is interrogated. We are also talking to the woman, her family and the family of the accused to ascertain a motive,” the police said.
Police are also investigating where and how the girl obtained the weapon.
