CWG 2022, Murali Sreeshankar wins long jump silver: India’s Murali Sreeshankar on Thursday created history by winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump event of the Commonwealth Games athletics competition but Mohammad Anees Yahia finished fifth. Sreeshankar is the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s long jump event of the Commonwealth Games.

First Indian to win Silver in Long Jump
Sreeshankar, a strong contender for the gold medal, won the silver medal in his fifth attempt with a distance of 8.08 meters. Lecuan Nairn of the Bahamas, who won the gold medal, also made a best effort of 8.08m in his second attempt. Lekuan’s second best effort of 7.98m, however, was better than Sreeshankar’s second best effort of 7.84m, for which he was declared the winner. Also Lecuan achieved this distance in his second attempt and got little help from the air. The wind speed at the time of Sreeshankar’s attempt was plus 1.5 meters per second while that of Nairn’s attempt was minus 0.1 meters per second.
Medal dedicated to father
23-year-old Murali Sreeshankar has dedicated his silver medal to his father and the Sports Ministry of India. After capturing the silver medal, Murali said, I am very happy. I was waiting for this moment for a long time. I desperately wanted to win a medal here. I was sure that a good jump could get me a medal.
