Should Rishabh Pant not recover from a horrific car crash, India could be looking for a new wicketkeeper batsman for their upcoming Test series against Australia. Pant is receiving treatment after being involved in a driving accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the early hours of Friday.
KS Bharat has often taken Pant’s place as wicketkeeper in recent Test matches, but former India selector Saba Karim thinks the 29-year-old may not be an ideal replacement. Instead, Karim said he looked like a better candidate because Ishan Kishan tends to score quickly like Pant.
“We agree that KS Bharat is being trained for a test keeping role. However, with respect to him, and given the role Pant has played on the test team, I feel Ishan Kishan is a better fit as an ideal replacement for Pant. He is playing the Ranji trophy and has scored 100s at a fast pace,” said Karim of India News.
Kishan is now favored to open India’s innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma in limited overs cricket after scoring a record double century against Bangladesh earlier in the month. Despite not having played a Test match yet, Pant is a regular for Jharkhand whenever possible in the Ranji Trophy. He recently scored a century against Kerala just days after scoring twice against Bangladesh.
“We won the test because of Pant’s presence. Because he was not only capable of winning matches, but he was doing it at a brisk pace. This was to pressure the opponents while giving the bowlers time to take 20 wickets. Kishan has never played red ball cricket for India A, but he has been playing domestic red ball cricket for several years,” said Karim.
