Rashtrapati Bhavan’s scenic Mughal gardens would now be known as Amrit Udyan. Indian President Smt Draupadi Murmu has taken a bold step to commemorate the auspicious “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” marking the 75th anniversary of his independence.

A move to rename the Mughal Gardens to Amrit Udyan is already frowned upon and will set off another storm in the BJP-led central government. However, the party leadership welcomed the president’s decision, saying it was a necessary step to break the shackles of the past colonial rule and stop glorifying the invaders.

The gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan are scheduled to open earlier this year. Smt Draupadi Murmu will start opening Amrit Udyan on 29 January 2023 and start Udyan Utsav. The public can visit the gardens starting Tuesday, January 31st.
