Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is preparing to launch 4G services in India soon. India is already seeing 5G rollouts by private telecom operators such as Jio and Airtel, but BSNL’s 4G will be special as the government-led telecom operators will be rolling out 4G using technology developed in-house in India.
BSNL awarded its OF 4G tender to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to provide 4G network connectivity in India. The IT giant will maintain a 4G network for BSNL for the next 10 years. According to the report, BSNL has already completed a 4G PoC with TCS in October 2022 and will sign a commercial contract soon.
TCS was the sole bidder for the BSNL 4G rollout plan, with a last bid date of November 18, 2022. So, if carriers set everything up as planned with TCS, BSNL 4G could launch as early as 2023. Meanwhile, shortly after the 4G launch, BSNL will also begin planning for 5G.
Earlier at IMC 2022, the Center for Telematics Development (CDot) has already demonstrated its unique 5G core technology. Domestic technology will also reduce India’s dependence on other countries and foreign companies for its 5G core. This will help BSNL deliver 5G alongside non-standalone (NSA) network services. In particular, the government suggested the introduction of BSNL 5G right after the launch of 4G. Telecommunications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned in an early interview that BSNL will launch 5G on 15 August 2023.
Meanwhile, BSNL users can take advantage of offers on existing broadband services provided by public operators. BSNL offers up to 3.3TB of monthly data and unlimited voice calls on select broadband plans. Priced at Rs 275 and Rs 775, these plans provide high-speed internet with speeds of 30 Mbps and 150 Mbps respectively, along with unlimited voice calls for 75 days with OTT benefits added.
Meanwhile, Realince Jio and Airtel are rolling out 5G services in more cities across India. Jio True 5G is currently available in Delhi (NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Varanasi, Chennai, Natdwara, Bengaluru and Hyderabad). Jio users in these cities can enjoy 5G services through the Jio Welcome Offer. Airtel has also expanded its 5G coverage to 12 cities in India. Called Airtel 5G Plus, the service is available in Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Panipat, Siliguri, Nagpur and Chennai.
