2022 was a bleak year for the Hindi film industry with less than six films doing well at the box office. Since the Covid-19 pandemic there has been a major shift in the way cinema is consumed in India. As a result, few films exceeded staggering numbers and few had to bite the dust with collections well below budget.
Even during this meager box office run, there have been a few actors who have impressed with their incredible box office performances, and now that things are slowly getting back to normal, we expect 2023 to significantly outperform 2022. The biggest grosser of the year was Kartik Aaryan who steered Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 to staggering box office numbers and had no flop films to his credit. It was an interesting year for Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgn and Anupam Kher at the box office. Each of them has had at least one movie that was a huge success, but either the movie was misfired or it wasn’t a huge success. Ajay has also grabbed attention on digital platforms with Runway 34 and Rudra: The Age of Darkness.
Both Varun Dhawan films scored decent numbers, but it’s not a huge feat as there was more potential business. Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan have had an unforgettable year with their long awaited film ruined. Almost every other actor from Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh to John Abraham, Tiger Shroff, Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanjay Dutt, Sidharth Malhotra and Shahid Kapoor had dismal box office years.
Here is the list of highest-grossing actors in 2022 based on total nett India collections.
- Ajay Devgun
Ajay Devgn tops the list in 2022 with his 3 films as lead roles contributing an aggregate Rs 300 nett. Drishyam 2 was a major contributor with $235 million, while Thank God and Runway 34 contributed more than $70 million in combined business. He also landed important roles in two successful films this year, RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Considering the numbers from these two films, the actor’s total net earnings for Hindi surpasses Rs. 700 cr mark. Interestingly, Devgn was also the best actor of 2020 with the release of Tanhaji: Silent Warrior.
- Anupam Ker
Anupam Kher helmed the biggest hit of the year, The Kashmir Files, and was part of another critically acclaimed and commercially inspiring film, Uunchai. The cumulative nett collection of both films is around Rs. As well as 280 krons, the actor also played a major role in Tollywood’s sequel to the mythological drama film, Karthikeya 2, which shocked a deal with a Hindi collection that went over 3 billion rupees.
- Ranbir Kapoor:
Ranbir Kapoor’s box office year was a mixed bag as he saw the biggest failure of his career in the form of Shamshera but also a commercial hit in the form of Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva. The total nett Hindi collection of his two films is just over Rs. 270 cr and with the dubbed version of Brahmstra included, the realized amount is around Rs 300 cr.
- Akshay Kumar:
Akshay Kumar has had an unforgettable year with all four of his films flopping at the box office. The cumulative net collection of four films by Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan and Ram Setu is around Rs. 235 cr net. This figure cannot be ignored as Akshay Kumar ranks at number 4 on the list of highest-grossing actors of 2022.
- Kartik Aryan:
Kartik Aaryan has a big theatrical release in the form of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in 2022. The film exceeded Rs 180 cr and emerged as the 4th highest Hindi earner of the year behind The Kashmir Files, Drishyam 2 and Brahmastra. The actor is enjoying great success in 2023 with his major solo releases, and if they perform well he will find himself amongst the crop of today’s biggest stars.
- Varun Dhawan:
Varun Dhawan has released two ambitious theatrical releases. Both films performed decently, but had more scope. The total collection of both films is over Rs. 140 cr nett and that helped the actor to get the 6th spot on the list of highest-grossing Hindi actors in 2022. 100 cr nett which accounts for less than 50 lakh ticket sales. It should be noted that Bollywood’s Mahanayak Amitabh Bachchan has five theatrical releases in 2022, three of which are starring roles. He was instrumental in the commercial success of Brahmastra and the critical success of Runway 34. Uunchai put up decent numbers, but Jhund and Goodbye turned out to be a disaster. 2023 will be interesting to track as the movie slate is much better than 2022. If all goes well, there is a chance that the total Hindi film collection in 2023 will almost double that of 2022. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more analytical pieces like this one.
