Kannada film actor Puneeth Rajkumar to be posthumously honored with the ‘Karnataka Ratna’ award

BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said Kannada film actor Puneeth Rajkumar will be posthumously honored with the ‘Karnataka Ratna’ award, on the occasion of ‘Karnataka Rajyotsava’, the state’s foundation day on November 1. The actor passed away last year. He will be the 10th person to be honored with the state’s highest civilian honour.

Karnataka Ratna Award to Puneeth Rajkumar

Chief Minister Bommai said, “We have decided to confer Karnataka Ratna award to Puneeth Rajkumar on November 1, we will form a committee for its preparation which will also include Rajkumar’s family members, it will be organized with full respect.” The Chief Minister inaugurated the annual Independence Day Flower Show at Lalbagh Glass-House here.

Puneet Rajkumar had left the world on 29 October

This year’s flower show saw a special floral tribute to Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar and his son and actor Puneeth Rajkumar. Puneeth, considered a shining star of Kannada cinema, was the youngest of five children of Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar. He died of a heart attack on 29 October at the age of 46.

Chief Minister had announced

The Chief Minister had in November last year announced the award to the late actor at “Punita Namana” event organized by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) in association with the Film Actors and Technicians Association to pay tribute to Puneeth Rajkumar. The Karnataka Ratna was last awarded to Dr Virendra Hegde for social service in 2009.

The special thing is that Puneeth’s late father Rajkumar is among the first people to receive the Karnataka Ratna Award in 1992 along with the poet Kuvempu. Other personalities honored with the award are S Nijalingappa (Politics), CNR Rao (Science), Dr Devi Prasad Shetty (Medicine), Bhimsen Joshi (Music), Shivakumar Swamiji (Social Service) and Dr J Javre Gowda (Education and Literature).

Karnataka Ratna Award was seen in these films

Apart from an actor, Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar was also a playback singer, TV presenter, producer and he has also sung in some films. Puneeth acted in more than 30 Kannada films including films like Appu, Abhi, Veera Kannadiga, Maurya, Arasu, Milana, Rajakumara, and Anjani Putra. Puneeth was the son of late Kannada cinema legend Rajkumar and his mother Parvathamma was a producer and distributor.
